Munny Charity Show

When Mr. Stinkhead approached me to see if I might be interested in filling in to cover Kid Robot's Munny Charity Show Event, he didn't have to wait long for an answer. I was thrilled at the invite, and was happy to help out the guys at Millionaire Playboy, even if I still wasn't 100% certain what the Munny Show was all about.

The Munny Show is the product of Kid Robot, and the opening night reception took place simultaneously in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. On display were customized Munnys, vinyl toys that look not too far removed from a teddy bear. Profits from the sales of these one-of-a-kind 8-inch tall vinyl toys benefit the Feed The Children, aiding children affected by Hurricane Katrina. Many of these toys were customized by celebrities and celebrity artists.

Anyway, my wife and I arrived only a little bit fashionably late, and already the line to enter was stretched down the block. Fortunate for us, we were on the VIP list, and were able to slip right into the show. Even though the doors had only opened maybe a half hour earlier, the event was packed shoulder to shoulder. I was surprised at the sheer amount of people attending the show. Maybe the open bar helped, but the majority of the people were actively viewing the work or sitting at one of the craft tables vigorously designing their own custom Munny. The crowd was as diverse as the work itself, with guests ranging in ages from 5 to 85 or so. Well, I'm guessing on that last part.

It took us awhile to work our way back to the exhibit itself, and I apologize for the blurriness of the photos. Almost all of the pics had to be snapped in between the crowd, and it was almost too packed to really get a good look at the actual artwork. Still, the work on display was great.

One of the things that caught me off-guard was the amount of celebrity contributors on display. We saw contributions from Whoopi Goldberg, Rev Run (of Run-DMC fame), DALEK, Elizabeth Berkley... Waitasec, Elizabeth Berkley of Showgirls fame? I thought maybe it was just a coincidence, that maybe some local designer shared the same name. Turns out, though, standing to my immediate right as I was photographing her piece was the actress herself! I must admit, I know she's got a bad rap for being not the best actress in the world, but in person, she was radiant. I was surprised by how tall she was, but what impressed me the most was how open and friendly she greeted people at the show.

Now, I'm not 100% certain, but I would swear that Reverend Run was also on hand. I spotted a guy there that was a dead-ringer for him, but as he was working with the children, helping them to paint their Munny figures, I didn't want to interrupt. Still, I wish I had the opportunity to talk to him about his own contribution to the show.

As long as you didn't mind the crowd, the show itself went off great. Everyone seemed to be having a great time, whether it was celebrity watching, the free drinks, or creating one's own Munny. The atmosphere itself was nothing short of festive, and everyone wanted to do their part to make the show a success.

Thanks again to Kid Robot and Millionaire Playboy for allowing me the opportunity to attend the event! It was definitely one of the most fun shows I've been to in ages.
