B.B.Birdy's Funny Club Review by Mr. Stinkhead
Our friend Nakanari sent us some new figures by designer B.B.Birdy from the upcoming Funny Club show. Check these out.
Jack We got two Jack variants. One of the printed skulls is silver, the other glows in the dark. Sweet! The figures themselves stand about 3.5" tall, and have a ball-jointed neck. They also have shoulders, waist, tail, hips, and ankle joints. He free stands great, but looks even better kneeling on his knuckles.
I love the packaging on these guys. They're not blind packed, like traditional Japanese mini-figs. The box is made of translucent plastic, you can see the figure inside, and there is a sticker telling you what figure is within. You can easily open the package and remove the figure, but replace him without damaging the packaging, unlike a blister pack. This will appease MOC collectors and open-and-play-with-them collectors alike. There is also some funny Japanenglish warnings on the choking hazards.
Minifigure We also received a considerably smaller sized minifig of the B.B.Birdy figure. He's blind packed, meaning you won't know which figure you're going to get. Open up the cool matchbox sized box and see who you got. The figure I got had all of the same articulation, he was exactly the same as the full-sized Jack, only smaller. He had a different design. The base of his foot says "Taipei Toys." The paint app was a little-bit flawed, but overall this was a sweet addition to the collection.
Misfits of Nakanari Here are two of the Misfits of Nakanari designs applied to the B.B.Birdy body design. These look great. The translation is clean and wonderfully pulled off. The paint apps are clean, the overall figure looks great. If you're unfamiliar with the Misfits of Nakanari, check out this link. The original Nakanari figures were on display in the SubCultures: The Art of the Action Figure exhibit coordinated by our own R Hunter.
Xmas Jay Figure Also included in the set was a Xmas Jay and mini-Jay figure set. The full-sized Jay styled like Santa Claus, the two mini-Jays looking like reindeer. I like how this obvious holiday set introduces you to the stylized Jay line. Inspired by Bruce Lee, this line of 3" tall minifigs come in a variety of incarnations.
This set was great. This is an up and coming independant toy series, and I like what I'm seeing. I wouldn't have checked out this series on my own, but I'm glad it was brought to my attention. Check out all the links below, and see if the Funny Club show is coming to your neck of the woods.
